Book Summary
Out of My Mind is an inspiring story, that allows you to get to know yourself better. It deepens your identity because you get to understand another person's identity.
Main character and Melody Brooks has Cerebral Palsy, is a genius, and can't do anything on her own. She is overlooked by every member of her school community, and that has crushed her soul. Melody's soul purpose in life is for people to really see her. To be viewed as useless is depleting.
Melody's life journey is possible because she's accomplishing her goal step by step, day by day, through her strong personality. She's determined, dreaming. and willing to live a hard life. She has to overcome so many challenges. Each time she overcomes an aspect of difficulty, her identity deepens. Melody has a very distinct identity, it's just bottled up inside.
From day one, things weren't easy. Melody's parents gave her strength though, and so did neighbour Mrs. V. They inspired her and encouraged her to share her identity with the world.
School would be an even bigger challenge for Melody. She was stuck inside her own head, in -what everyone called- the "Retard Room." If only she had a voice to use, she could reveal her true self.
People are so mean to Melody, they ignore her and think she's just a dumb blob in a wheel chair. Although the behaviour is unacceptable, it isn't necessarily their fault. The stereotype that all disabled people are dumb is very hard to get passed. The outward identity of a disabled person is stereotypically bad. It is an unconscious choice to be impacted by that stereotype. This applies in the bully's case.
When a way to speak comes around, no one is willing to choose to see her. That makes it a hundred times harder to reveal herself. Melody must use all her strength to shine through the clutter of stereotypes.
Through many terrifying and defining events, Melody slowly chooses to make the world a better place, by simply being herself.
